When I use “infamous” to describe this festival, I am not just slinging that word around. Commuted-to by countless outsiders and coveted by metalheads around the world, the Deathfest company has undoubtedly brought gold to Canada’s francophone fields. Sporting local underground acts like Tomb Mold and Outre-Tombe as well as legendary names like Demolition Hammer and Autopsy, any fan of extreme music not in attendance this past weekend should be shamed and banned from the metal club on Tuesdays at lunch.
Definite tour of the year contenders Judas Priest and Deep Purple took their collaborative powers to Camden, New Jersey this past Sunday. While traditionally a day of worship within many faiths, such was no different last night as the metal and hard rock Gods held a late night mass in honour of their local followers.

Sumac announced a North American tour with supporting acts Dälek and Infernal Coil a few months ago. The Montreal date finally rolled around, and I knew the music fan within myself would be disappointed if I missed such a sonically-varied night.

While metal fans often only cite the biggest and oldest names when discussing their favourites, the stoner/doom underground is alive and coughing. Telekinetic Yeti and Hyborian have both stirred up the dedicated fanbase with their newest (and only) LPs, and I was lucky enough to see them both yesterday in concert.

Mortuary Drape and Volahn announced a North American tour a few months back, and although I don’t listen to either group, the metal lover deep within me knew I wouldn’t want to miss this show. I came in with no expectations and left with high opinions of the two acts; and I’m not really that much of a black metal fan.

Underground death metal pioneers Of Feather and Bone and Tomb Mold have undertaken a 14-date North American tour that was announced a couple of months ago. The two groups managed to successfully make their way from Texas up through the Western coast of the United States and eventually across towards the East, playing dates in Boston and New York. The two final dates of the tour were held here at home in Canada on June 25th in Montreal and the 26th in Toronto. The collection of dates represents one of the biggest sets of shows in succession for the two small groups.

Early death metal pioneers Obituary are currently touring North America to support their new self-titled album and I was lucky enough to catch them in Montreal on May 9th. The group brought an arsenal of supporting acts with them that were diverse and each had something different to offer.

“Big Four” members Anthrax announced a North American co-tour with metalcore legends Killswitch Engage a couple of months ago. Although the two bands tend to cater to different generations, the MTELUS in Montreal was packed with eager fans. All in all, a great performance from both groups. Let’s go through a rundown of the night’s events. Continue reading “Killswitch Engage, Anthrax, and Havok Open their Tour with a Blistering Performance at the MTELUS in Montreal”
